I first heard about implementing Virtual Servers about 6 months ago. I had a contract with a client that had hundreds of users worldwide, using Enterprise PDM. When I was told about Virtual Servers, the first thought that came to my my mind was "this sounds risky".
Why would I want to have one machine run multiple servers and applications? Wouldn't that increase the chance of failures? If one application crashes, could that take out an entire disc? Conversely, one disc failure could take down multiple servers.
I've been dying to try Virtual Servers and now I am. I built a new server machine today. I added a 1TB disc just for Virtual Servers. Then I downloaded the free VMWare Player that creates and installs Virtual Servers. So far, I have the DNS Server on the C: disc of the host machine, the Web Server and the File Server are on separate Virtual Servers. Interesting... More to come.
Any one else have experience using Virtual Servers?
